5 Signs You'd Thrive as an Independent Insurance Agent

Timothy CoatesMarch 20, 2025

I have worked with a lot of people who were exploring a career in insurance for the first time. Some of them crushed it. Some of them struggled. After years of mentoring new agents, I have noticed clear patterns in who thrives and who does not. Here are the five biggest indicators.

1. You Are Self-Motivated

There is no boss standing over your shoulder. No one is going to tell you to start working at 9 AM or follow up on that lead from yesterday. You set your own schedule, and that sounds amazing until you realize it also means you are responsible for your own productivity.

The agents who succeed are the ones who do not need external motivation. They get up, open their lead queue, and start making calls because they understand that their income is directly tied to their effort. If you need someone else to hold you accountable every day, this structure will be a challenge.

2. You Are Coachable

This might be the most important one. The insurance industry has a learning curve, and the agents who advance fastest are the ones who listen, ask questions, and implement feedback without ego.

Being coachable does not mean being passive. It means being willing to try something a different way, even if it feels uncomfortable at first. It means trusting the process before you have seen the results. The system works, but only if you actually follow it.

3. You Are Comfortable Talking to People

You do not need to be a natural salesperson. You do not need to be an extrovert. But you do need to be comfortable having real conversations with real people on the phone and on video calls.

Most of what we do is listening. Understanding what a family is worried about, what they are trying to protect, and what they can afford. Then explaining their options clearly. If you can have a genuine conversation and ask good questions, you can do this job well.

4. You Want More Than Average

This career attracts people who are hungry for something different. Maybe you are stuck in a job with a ceiling. Maybe you are tired of trading time for a paycheck that does not reflect your effort. Maybe you want the freedom to work from home anywhere in the U.S. and build something that is yours.

Whatever the specific motivation, the agents who succeed share a common thread: they are not content with average. They want to build something, and they are willing to work for it.

5. You Understand That Freedom Requires Discipline

This is the one that trips people up the most. The freedom of a remote, commission-based career is real. You can work from your home office, your kitchen table, or a coffee shop. You can take a Tuesday off to go to your kid's school play. You can build your schedule around your life.

But that freedom comes with a cost: discipline. No one is going to fire you for skipping a day of calls. But your income will reflect it. The agents who thrive are the ones who treat this like a business, not a hobby. They have a daily routine, they stick to it, and they protect their working hours.

Not Sure If This Is You?

If you read through this list and found yourself nodding along to most of them, there is a good chance this career could work for you. If a couple of them gave you pause, that is normal too. Nobody shows up on day one fully formed.
